Frequently Asked Questions
If you live in a hard water area like 13 million households do, fighting limescale will be a constant battle. A water softener is a long-term solution that will banish limescale from your home forever. You’ll save hours cleaning not to mention the many other benefits you’ll experience to your appliances, hair & skin and to your pocket.
Your water softener will be installed where your stop cock is located. Normally this is under your kitchen sink where your water supply enters your home. In some instances, this may be located under your stairs or in another area of your home.
Our Premier Compact water softener is compact and designed to fit under most standard kitchen sinks. The Premier Maxi water softener is a semi-commercial softener catering for larger households. Due to its larger size, it would not fit under your kitchen sink and would need to be located in a utility room or garage.
Water softeners use a process called ‘ion exchange’ to remove the calcium and magnesium minerals from your water as it enters your home. These are the minerals that cause limescale and removing them makes the water ‘soft’. Having a water softener in your home is the only proven way to remove calcium and magnesium from your water.
If you have purchased a Premier Compact water softener from your local Authorised Kinetico Dealer, they will happily arrange installation for you. Fitting would normally take approximately 4 hours depending on the complexity of the installation and exactly where your stop cock is located.
As a rule of thumb and for an average family of four, we recommend about 4kg (or one block) per person, per month. This will vary in relation to the amount of water actually used and if you are a high water user you will use more.
Based on 4kg per person per month, if you purchase salt (based on block salt) from Kinetico, this will cost you approximately £11.60 per month for a family of 4. Salt can also be purchased from your local Authorised Kinetico Dealer. All Kinetico softeners are non-electric so you’ll be pleased to know the running of them won’t add to your electric bill either.
Yes you can. There is a small amount of sodium in softened water due to the water softening process, to put this into perspective there is more sodium in a glass of milk than in a glass of softened water. If you live in a very hard water (e.g. East Anglia) where the water hardness is over 400ppm you should have a separate water mains tap in the house. The only times we advise against drinking softened water is when making up formula for small babies or if you are on a prescribed low sodium diet.
This is not an instant process but over time soft water will remove the scale. A water softener should be an essential appliance for anyone moving into a new home to keep everything looking and running like new.
